Biography

Jermine Shua is a London and Milan based Artist.

She works across visual imagery, moving image and installation. Her practice examines the relationship between perception, language and human behaviour, with a particular interest in communication as a fundamental condition through which we experience and understand the world. Working through image, sound and constructed situations, she explores how meaning is produced, negotiated and altered as we each experience the world through the realities we inhabit.

Her works often begin with observations, ideas or forms of communication, which she develops through visual and spatial forms. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, she creates frameworks and sandboxes that allow meaning to remain open, shaped by the perspectives, associations and interpretations brought to them. Her work is attentive to the distance between what is expressed and what is understood, and to how meaning can shift according to the position from which something is perceived.

Her practice is informed by an interest in semiotics, social interaction and contemporary visual culture, particularly the ways in which images, gestures, objects and environments acquire meaning within different contextual frameworks. Across these forms, she considers how perception is not simply a way of receiving the world, but an active process through which we construct, interpret and make sense of the experience.
